PRESS RELEASE – February 27, 2024 – Masdar Arlington Energy, a unit of Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), on Tuesday said it has started construction of two battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in the UK with a combined capacity of 55 MW.
The UAE renewable energy company acquired UK-based Arlington Energy in October 2022 and a year ago announced a commitment to invest GBP 1 billion (USD 1.3bn/EUR 1.2bn) in BESS in the UK, targeting a pipeline of 3 GWh of projects
Masdar Arlington Energy has broken ground on the Royle Barn Road facility in Rochdale and the Welkin Road project in Stockport. Both located on previously industrialised sites, the batteries are expected to provide enough energy to power 25,700 homes.

“To achieve the global energy transition agreed in the UAE Consensus, we need to utilize world-changing renewable energy sources and technology, including wind, solar and battery energy storage. The two BESS plants we are breaking ground on today underline the critical role energy storage will play in helping energy systems and infrastructure in the UK and across the globe to move away from carbon-intensive sources of power,” commented Masdar chief executive Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi.
The announcement says that Masdar’s acquisition of Arlington Energy served as a catalyst for the company’s transition from investor to an active developer and supporter of the UK’s energy transition through battery storage offshore wind. In 2021, Masdar set up its global headquarters for offshore wind in the UK.
