A recent study introduces a new refrigeration technology called the Compression-Absorption Cascade Refrigeration Cycle (CACRC). This system combines Vapour-Compression Refrigeration (VCR) with Absorption Refrigeration Cycle (ARC) to improve efficiency and sustainability in cooling processes.
Researchers from Xi’an Jiaotong University published their findings in Energy Storage and Saving in February 2024. They focused on optimising the CACRC system by integrating vapour-compression and absorption refrigeration cycles.
The study examined 16 refrigerants in the vapour compression section and paired them with H2O-LiBr in the absorption section. Through this analysis, they identified the RE170/H2O-LiBr combination as the most efficient. This pairing demonstrated high coefficient of performance and exergy efficiency.

A notable aspect of the CACRC system is its utilisation of waste heat, reducing electricity consumption and promoting sustainability. By incorporating waste heat in the absorption section, the system enhances efficiency while reducing environmental impact.
Lead author Xiaopo Wang highlighted the significance of this advancement, stating its potential to improve sustainability in refrigeration practices.
The implications of this research extend to various industries, including food preservation and district cooling. The CACRC system offers a more efficient and sustainable alternative to traditional refrigeration methods, potentially reshaping industries and reducing environmental impact.
As industries seek to embrace sustainability, the CACRC system presents a practical solution for achieving greener and more efficient cooling processes.
