Mike Sexsmith of General Fusion highlighted the substantial benefits of this technology during Seattle Fusion Week, emphasising the crucial role it could play in addressing global energy needs.

Understanding Fusion

Fusion energy, which involves the fusion of atomic nuclei to release energy, promises to offer limitless, zero-emissions power without the radioactive byproducts associated with current fission-based nuclear plants. However, researchers are still working on achieving a sustainable and scalable fusion reaction that generates more energy than it consumes, though recent advancements show promise.

The Big Picture

If successfully developed, fusion energy could transform into a $40 trillion global market, according to Bloomberg estimates. This potential is already attracting significant investments from high-profile figures like Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and Sam Altman, along with substantial federal funding.

Seattle’s Strategic Advantage

At the Fusion Week conference hosted by the CleanTech Alliance, consultant Chris Ajemian pointed out that Washington state’s unique ecosystem positions it well to support the emerging fusion industry. The region boasts a combination of publicly funded research laboratories, universities, suppliers, manufacturers, utilities, international trade expertise, and supportive local government policies favoring clean energy.

Recent Developments

Several key projects and milestones underscore Seattle’s burgeoning fusion energy sector:

  • Helion Energy, based in Everett, announced plans to build a 500 MW fusion power plant for Nucor, America’s largest steel producer, with the goal of coming online by 2030. Helion also aims to build a reactor to supply electricity to Microsoft by 2028, potentially marking the world’s first fusion power purchase agreement.
  • Zap Energy received $5 million from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program earlier this year.
  • Avalanche Energy achieved a record 200 kilovolts in its micro-fusion reactor and secured $40 million in Series A funding. The company is exploring applications for tiny fusion cores in submersibles, space vehicles, and other technologies.
  • ExoFusion and Kyoto Fusioneering are also integral players, focusing on enhancing fusion device performance and developing essential fusion technologies, respectively. Kyoto is particularly focused on safe and efficient methods to handle and “breed” tritium, a scarce hydrogen isotope critical for fusion reactors.

Educational and Research Support

The presence of the University of Washington, Washington State University, and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory further strengthens the region’s position in fusion research. Michael Campbell, an expert in laser science and plasma physics, emphasised the importance of these institutions during his keynote speech at Fusion Week.

Community and Investment

A thriving fusion hub in Seattle will depend on progress from the fusion companies themselves and on support from the community, environmentalists, and policymakers. According to Ajemian, universities and vocational schools will need to train a new generation of fusion workers, and ongoing public and private investment will be essential to maintain momentum in this sector.
