Climate Insider Brief:

  • Carbon13, in partnership with Barclays Eagle Labs, has invested £120,000 in each of six innovative climatetech startups through its Venture Launchpad program.
  • The selected startups address various environmental challenges, including carbon-negative insect protein, ductless indoor climate control, AI-powered fashion waste management, compostable biochar-based foam, household food waste reduction, and sustainable protein ingredients.
  • Dr. Nicky Dee, CEO and co-founder, highlighted the broader impacts of these ventures beyond emissions reduction, such as improving air quality and disrupting traditional economic pathways.

Carbon13, the renowned Venture Builder dedicated to addressing the climate emergency, has announced new investments in six innovative ventures through its accelerator program, the Venture Launchpad. Each venture has secured £120,000 in Pre-Seed investment, fostering the development of cutting-edge technologies aimed at mitigating waste and promoting sustainability.

The Venture Launchpad, launched in partnership with Barclays Eagle Labs, began its first cohort 12 months ago. Over this period, Carbon13 has invested in 14 ventures, showcasing a commitment to fostering impactful climatetech innovations. Notable alumni from the program include Natural Building Systems, Pattern Project, Hubl, and Optimise AI.

The six ventures selected for the latest round of investment are focused on diverse and advanced technologies, ranging from biochar-based polystyrene alternatives to AI-powered circular fashion systems. These startups are unified by a central theme: addressing waste as a critical opportunity for climate action. The ventures’ solutions not only aim to reduce emissions but also enhance value creation and efficiency in complex systems, demonstrating the multifaceted impact of climate tech.

The Six Ventures

  1. Future By Insects: This venture combines microalgae and insect production to create the world’s first carbon net-negative insect protein for animal feed. This innovation targets the significant annual emissions of 2.5 billion CO2e from the animal feed industry, promoting a more sustainable future.
  2. Anzen Climate Wall: Anzen has developed a novel ductless indoor climate control system that integrates space heating, cooling, and heat recovery ventilation into a single wall-mounted unit. This decentralised system is designed to reduce energy bills and enhance indoor air quality.
  3. Eslando: Addressing textile waste in the fashion industry, Eslando uses digital product passports (DPPs) and AI-powered sorting to help fashion brands and waste management companies efficiently recover materials at scale.
  4. Carbon Cell: On a mission to eliminate polystyrene waste, Carbon Cell offers a patent-pending, non-toxic, compostable foam material made from carbon-negative biochar and natural binders.
  5. Remy: Formerly known as Taste Don’t Waste, Remy leverages AI and automation to help households reduce food waste by 70%, saving time and money. Additionally, Remy collects user data to enhance corporate partners’ Scope 3 emissions reporting and waste mitigation strategies.
  6. Fermtech: Based in Oxford, this climate biotech company meets the demand for affordable and sustainable protein ingredients by converting food industry side streams into nutritious and flavorful products.

Female Founders and Impact Potential

Five of the six ventures have female founders, reflecting Carbon13’s broader portfolio, where over 60% of the ventures are led by women. This emphasis on diversity underscores Carbon13’s commitment to inclusive innovation in climatetech.

Dr. Nicky Dee, CEO and co-founder of Carbon13, commented on the recent investments:

“All our ventures contribute to net zero, but tracking emissions tells just part of the story. We can see other key benefits, such as health from improving air quality and avoiding ecotoxicity and microplastics when discarded. Other companies will prompt new economic pathways as they disrupt the ‘normal’ way of doing things.”

Through the Venture Launchpad, Carbon13 continues to advance its mission of tackling the climate emergency by supporting startups that offer transformative solutions for a sustainable future.
