Carbon Limit Receives Federal Funding Through South Florida ClimateReady Tech Hub

Climate Insider Brief:

  • Carbon Limit, a leader in climate tech for the concrete industry, has been awarded $740,000 from the South Florida ClimateReady Tech Hub’s $19.5 million funding initiative by the U.S. Department of Commerce.
  • This grant supports Carbon Limit’s innovative CO2-capturing technology, aiming to advance sustainable and resilient infrastructure solutions amid climate challenges.
  • As part of the ClimateReady initiative, Carbon Limit will collaborate with universities and industry partners like the University of Miami and Titan America.

PRESS RELEASE – July 12, 2024 – Carbon Limit, a climate tech company transforming the concrete industry with its proprietary CO2-capturing technology, was named a grant recipient of the South Florida ClimateReady Tech Hub’s recent $19.5 million funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA). With the funds and support from the Tech Hub and the EDA, Carbon Limit will continue to serve as a leader in sustainable and resilient infrastructure (SRI) solutions for the climate crisis.

‍In 2023, the South Florida ClimateReady Tech Hub was announced as one of 12 Tech Hubs across the nation slated to receive a combined total of $504 million in funds authorized by the CHIPS and Science Act. The ClimateReady Tech Hub aims to scale the production and delivery of critical technologies to strengthen America’s clean energy transition and national security. In connection with this award, Carbon Limit will receive $740,000 to scale advanced concrete technologies, including its proprietary CaptureCrete® solution, throughout regional communities affected by climate change. Carbon Limit will deploy these funds while drawing on the ClimateReady Tech Hub’s support and collaborative structure to further develop and deploy clean concrete and decarbonization solutions.

‍Carbon Limit is focused on accelerating the deployment and expansion of cement technologies that help lower emissions while improving performance. Carbon Limit is already in production of CaptureCrete®, a pour-in additive used during the concrete manufacturing process that employs CO2 mineralization to significantly capture, store, and ultimately reduce concrete’s carbon footprint. This solution, in addition to other Carbon Limit offerings, provides built-environment decarbonization without sacrificing performance or requiring untested and complicated technology. With these solutions and within the ClimateReady Tech Hub, Carbon Limit will collaborate with the University of Miami, Florida International University, Titan America and others, on sustainable, durable, and resilient infrastructure projects.

“We are proud to be a recipient of funding from the South Florida ClimateReady Tech Hub, and deeply appreciate the recognition for our innovation and leadership,” said Tim Sperry, Carbon Limit’s Founder and CEO. “Resilient, clean concrete is critically important, especially in the neighborhoods and communities who are facing the brunt of climate change impacts. This is urgent work, and Carbon Limit stands ready to lead the way with real-world solutions.”

‍Carbon Limit also looks forward to the economic and societal benefits of the Tech Hub program. The ClimateReady initiative is expected to create 23,000 new green union jobs over the next five years – 15,000 of which will go towards underserved communities – with an average base salary of $86,000. In the next decade, the Tech Hub is projected to generate 41 billion dollars in revenue.

‍“Concrete is the second-most used substance in the world behind only water and presents a unique opportunity for decarbonization,” said Jeremy Healey, President of Carbon Limit. “We’re bringing a climate change solution directly to the builders and communities who need it. CaptureCrete’s impact can be as global as concrete’s usage. This funding recognizes Carbon Limit as a catalyst for change.”
