Imagine Growing Mature Forests Within a Few Weeks to Sequester Carbon: Brilliant Planet’s CDR Vision

Brilliant Planet, a U.K.-based company, has developed an innovative approach to carbon sequestration using algae, which captures carbon dioxide 50 times faster than trees. Co-founded by Dr. Raffael Jovine, who has a strong background in algal genetics and environmental science, the company has refined its technology over 12 years. The process involves pumping nutrient-rich seawater into onshore ponds, where algae grow rapidly before being harvested, dried, and buried to sequester the carbon. This method not only captures carbon efficiently but also helps deacidify seawater.

The company’s technology has garnered significant funding, receiving over £5.5 million in grants and more than $20 million from investors like Union Square Ventures and Toyota Ventures. Brilliant Planet’s business model revolves around selling high-quality carbon removal credits. Their first commercial-scale facility aims to draw down 260,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually, potentially generating $46.8 million in revenue. The long-term goal is to reduce the cost of carbon removal to around $100 per ton by 2027/2028.

In addition to its primary focus on carbon sequestration, Brilliant Planet’s approach offers ecological benefits by restoring seawater to its pre-industrial acidity levels without depleting nutrients. The demand for high-quality carbon credits, which are verifiable and durable, is increasing. This trend, along with potential regulatory changes, is expected to benefit companies like Brilliant Planet that offer reliable carbon removal solutions.

Compared to mechanical direct air capture (DAC) technologies, Brilliant Planet’s algae-based method is more energy-efficient and cost-effective. While DAC companies face high removal costs and technical challenges, Brilliant Planet’s nature-based solution provides a scalable and sustainable alternative. By leveraging algal biology, Dr. Jovine aims to address climate change innovatively and effectively, positioning Brilliant Planet as a key player in the carbon removal market.

Key Highlights

Innovative Approach:

  • Algae Cultivation: Nutrient-rich seawater is pumped into a series of ponds where algae grow exponentially, acquiring most of their biomass in the last two days before harvesting.
  • Carbon Sequestration: The harvested algae are dried and buried underground, where the cool temperatures prevent decay, ensuring long-term carbon storage.

Commercial Viability:

  • Funding and Support: Brilliant Planet has received over £5.5 million in grants from Innovate UK and more than $20 million from investors such as Union Square Ventures and Toyota Ventures.
  • Revenue Model: The company plans to generate revenue by selling high-quality carbon removal credits and licensing its technology globally.
