Climate Insider Brief:

  • Schneider Electric is investing £42 million to build a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, set to open in 2025.
  • The facility will focus on producing components for electric vehicles, renewable energy technologies, and energy-efficient systems.
  • The plant aims for net-zero emissions for Scope 1 and 2, incorporating on-site solar power and advanced energy-efficient technologies.

Schneider Electric, a prominent leader in energy management and electrical components, has announced a significant investment of £42 million to establish a cutting-edge manufacturing plant in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. Scheduled to open in 2025, this state-of-the-art facility is designed to address the growing demand for electric vehicle (EV) components, renewable energy technologies, and energy-efficient systems.

The new plant will serve as a model for sustainable operations, integrating advanced technologies to reduce energy waste and enhance the use of renewable energy. Schneider Electric aims for the facility to achieve net-zero emissions for Scope 1 and 2, incorporating on-site renewable energy generation alongside ultra-efficient systems such as automated heating, cooling, and lighting sensors.

Approximately 30% of the plant’s energy needs will be met through an on-site solar power system, with photovoltaic (PV) panels covering half of the facility’s roof. The remaining energy will be sourced from certified renewable sources via the grid. The plant is also targeting an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating, which reflects high standards in sustainable building design.

Beyond its environmental goals, the new facility is expected to generate over 200 jobs in the region. Scarborough has long been a key manufacturing hub for Schneider Electric, currently employing 450 people and focusing on low-voltage switchgear production essential for the development of EV infrastructure and net-zero buildings.

Kelly Becker, President of Schneider Electric for the UK, Ireland, Belgium, and the Netherlands, highlighted the significance of the investment: “The region has long been part of our operational presence in the UK, and we’re excited to expand this as part of our commitment to investing in the UK’s green economy. The new facility in Scarborough represents a pillar of innovation in net zero and one which will be an industry benchmark for the transition to sustainable, energy-efficient buildings.”

The facility will also promote sustainable transport options for its workforce, including 30 EV charging stations and amenities for cyclists such as bike racks, shelters, and on-site showers.

In partnership with Natural England, Schneider Electric is undertaking habitat creation efforts for protected species at the site, while prioritizing the preservation of existing trees and natural features to support local biodiversity.

Stephen Phipson, Chief Executive of the manufacturing trade association Make UK, praised the initiative: “This facility is a marvellous example of how sustainable manufacturing can be achieved while creating many highly skilled jobs. Green technologies are crucial for addressing many of the challenges we face, and Schneider Electric should be commended for leading this effort.”

The announcement follows Schneider Electric’s previous £7.2 million investment in upgrading its manufacturing facility in Leeds, which is set to create an additional 100 green jobs. This ongoing commitment underscores the company’s dedication to sustainable growth and innovation in clean technology.

David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, welcomed the new investment, noting its potential impact on the region: “This new manufacturing facility will drive new, quality jobs in Scarborough and help us advance towards becoming England’s first carbon-negative region. Schneider Electric’s leadership in this sector is likely to attract further investment and enhance our standing as a hub of production and advanced engineering excellence.”
