Grant Funding and Strategic Importance

cylib GmbH secured a multi-million Euro grant from North Rhine-Westphalia’s Ministry of Economic Affairs to build a FOAK battery recycling plant in Dormagen. The plant will use proprietary OLiC technology to recover critical materials such as lithium, graphite, and cobalt, contributing to the EU Critical Raw Materials Act. With plans to recycle 10,000 tons of black mass annually by 2027, this initiative represents a significant step toward advancing circular economy practices in Europe.

Scaling Innovation in Battery Recycling

The funding follows cylib’s record-breaking €55 million financing round in May 2024, which included backing from Porsche Ventures and Bosch Ventures. This positions cylib as a leader in European battery recycling, with proprietary technology developed at RWTH Aachen University. The company aims to enhance its recycling process with additional refining and upstream steps, ensuring the efficient recovery of valuable materials while minimizing environmental impact.

Broader Impact and Industry Implications

The FOAK project is part of North Rhine-Westphalia’s “Produktives.NRW” program, which allocated €100 million to innovative climate-neutral technologies. cylib’s CEO, Dr. Lilian Schwich, emphasized the importance of the funding for scaling recycling technology and addressing the raw material challenges facing Europe’s manufacturing sector. With its state-of-the-art approach, cylib is poised to contribute significantly to the region’s energy transition and sustainability goals. Read More
