Uruguay has inaugurated its first green hydrogen hub, executed by local company Vivestar.

The Vivestar Technologies H2 Hub now has the first operational electrolyzers in the South American country, the company said April 24.

Facilities and Capabilities

The hub includes a hydrogen technology assembly and assembly workshop; a laboratory for design, modeling, and testing; and a specialized training area for hydrogen technologies, which will have a focus on industrial and commercial applications.

Vivestar also launched H-Armonia, a community to promote public commitments to environmental responsibility in the development of green hydrogen.

“We know that hydrogen generates both expectations and doubts,” Vivestar CEO Pablo Diaz said.

“That’s why we created this space: to open up knowledge, design, experiment, and build solutions tailored to our realities, taking on the challenge with commitment and transparency.”

Uruguay’s Hydrogen Strategy and Goals

Uruguay launched a green hydrogen study in 2023, and aims to use its solar and wind energy resources to power hydrogen production. It also aims to use green energy in transportation and fertilizers, while developing exports including e-methanol, green ammonia, and sustainable aviation fuels.

It is targeting 9 GW of hydrogen capacity by 2040.
