Insider Brief:

  • Hydro-Quebec will diversify beyond hydropower to incorporate solar energy into its grid.
  • It launched a tender for 300 MW of solar energy by 2035.
  • The utility is also working with authorities to allow more solar panels on residential rooftops.

Hydro-Quebec, an energy producer, distributor, and utility for the province of Quebec, said May 6 it will build 3000 megawatts of solar power by 2035.

The plans come on the heels of an ambitious energy saving and efficiency plan.

The utility depends on hydropower to generate 98.53% of its hydropower, with another 0.11% generated from wind. Biomass, gas, and waste generate the remainder.

Hydro-Quebec has launched a first call for tenders for 300 MW, with solar farms of a maximum capacity of 25 MW each, to be connected to the grid by 2029. The bids must prioritize “maximum economic spinoffs” for Quebec, and avoid agricultural areas. Bids must also have a commitment to responsible equipment sourcing.

The development of solar farms with a greater than 25 MW capacity is also planned, Hydro Quebec said. It will develop these farms in cooperation with renewable companies, local communities, and First Nations and Inuit groups.

Hydro-Quebec is also looking to make self-installation of solar panels for residential homes easier. Customers with solar panels can sell surplus energy to Hydro-Quebec, and reduce their energy bill by up to 30%. Hydro-Quebec is also working with energy administrator to increase the amount of solar panels allowed on rooftops.

“Our plan has launched the diversification of Quebec’s energy mix,” recently appointed President and CEO of Hydro-Quebec, Michael Sabia, said.

“Solar power offers significant potential for Quebec, and we will develop it at an evolving and rigorous manner, in collaboration with host communities and First Nations and Inuit.”
