Climate Insider Brief:

  • Numat, backed by Wavemaker Impact, aims to revolutionize bamboo processing with a $525,000 investment, focusing on eco-friendly practices and community empowerment.
  • Led by CEO Mark Sebastian, Numat introduced mobile processing units for on-site operations and a franchise-style BambooPreneur Program that empowers landowners to manage their own bamboo processing.
  • With the potential to plant 5,000 bamboo seedlings weekly, Numat contributes to carbon reduction and community growth, supported by Wavemaker Impact’s goal to reduce 10% of the global carbon budget by 2035.

Singapore-based climate tech venture builder, Wavemaker Impact, has launched Numat, a pioneering venture aimed at revolutionizing bamboo processing with sustainable practices. Backed by an initial investment of $525,000, Numat is positioned to become a leader in the primary processing of bamboo, emphasizing environmental stewardship and community empowerment.

With a unique mission to transform raw bamboo into eco-friendly products, Numat is starting with primary processing to create a robust foundation for further growth. The company’s approach is rooted in environmental responsibility, leveraging bamboo’s impressive ability to absorb around 4.6 tons of CO2 per ton harvested, making it a significant tool in combating climate change.

Wavemaker Impact, known for launching sustainability startups designed to cut 10% of the global carbon budget by 2035, emphasizes the scale of impact with its ‘100×100’ initiative—companies with the potential to abate 100 million metric tons of CO2e and generate annual revenue of $100 million.

Under the leadership of CEO Mark Sebastian, Numat has introduced a world-first mobile bamboo processing unit. This innovative solution facilitates on-site processing, enhancing operational flexibility and generating sustainable income for rural landowners. Through the mobile units, Numat plans to expand its reach efficiently, providing new economic opportunities for local communities.

Sebastian’s vision extends beyond processing, with the launch of the BambooPreneur Program—a franchise-like model enabling landowners to run their own processing units using Numat’s BambPro System. This approach, inspired by franchise models in the fast-food industry, simplifies operations and empowers rural entrepreneurs.

Numat is already driving sustainable growth, with the capacity to plant 5,000 new bamboo seedlings per week. In its early stages, Numat has successfully delivered three orders of bamboo poles and is set to complete major deliveries, including 12,500 rough slats for local and international buyers by the end of 2024.

Highlighting the dual benefits of environmental and economic impact, Mark Sebastian expressed gratitude for Wavemaker Impact’s support: “Our reason for being is not only to help the planet but to uplift communities that need it most. Numat strengthens our operations, supports our hardworking ‘Numatians’ on the ground, and provides lasting returns to our investors.”

Marie Cheong, Founding Partner at Wavemaker Impact, lauded bamboo’s potential: “Bamboo is one of the most compelling nature-based solutions in the fight against climate change. It offers an effective alternative to less sustainable materials and strengthens local communities.”

Cheong added that with competitive pricing from the Philippines, Numat’s bamboo products could compete globally. “We look forward to the innovations that Mark and his team will bring from the Philippines to the wider region,” she said, emphasizing their commitment to nature-driven solutions.

Numat’s forward-thinking initiatives demonstrate a path toward sustainable processing that aligns with its ethos: “From nature, for nature.” The company’s openness to partnerships further underscores its dedication to collaborative growth and environmental stewardship.
