Catalyzing €8 Billion for Europe’s Wind Industry

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and Societe Generale have partnered to unlock €8 billion in wind energy investments across Europe. Central to this initiative is a €500 million EIB counter-guarantee, enabling Societe Generale to create a €1 billion portfolio of bank guarantees. These guarantees will fund wind farm projects focused on manufacturing, supply chains, and grid interconnection, driving industrial competitiveness and decarbonization efforts.

Strategic Support for EU’s Renewable Energy Goals

This collaboration aligns with the European Commission’s 2030 renewable energy targets, including generating 45% of energy from renewables and achieving 32GW of the 117GW of wind capacity needed. The EIB’s €5 billion wind power package, introduced at COP28, underscores the urgency of reducing Europe’s reliance on fossil fuels while boosting energy independence.

Public-Private Collaboration for the Green Transition

The partnership highlights the importance of public-private cooperation in overcoming supply chain challenges and global competition in the wind energy sector. Supported by the EU’s InvestEU program, which aims to mobilize €372 billion by 2027, the initiative demonstrates how innovative financial tools can amplify investments and accelerate the sustainable energy transition.
